Resin Bound Driveways in Eastbourne
Resin Bound Driveways Across Eastbourne
A resin bound driveway gives a smooth, modern, seamless finish that suits everything from Victorian terraces near the town centre to newer homes in Sovereign Harbour and Kings Drive. Natural aggregate is mixed with a clear resin and hand-trowelled into place, leaving a surface with no loose stones and no weeds pushing up through joints. Gladstone Paving installs resin bound driveways throughout Eastbourne from our base in nearby Polegate.
Resin bound or resin bonded: what is the difference?
The names sound alike but the results are different. Resin bound surfaces mix the stones and resin together before laying, giving a smooth, porous finish. Resin bonded surfaces scatter loose gravel onto a layer of resin, which gives a rougher texture and is not permeable. For most Eastbourne driveways we recommend resin bound, because it looks cleaner and lets water drain through.
Benefits of a resin bound driveway
- Permeable: laid on a suitable open base, rainwater soaks through, which helps with the front-garden drainage rules and reduces puddling.
- Low maintenance: no loose gravel to rake back and fewer places for weeds to take hold. A sweep and an occasional wash keeps it looking good.
- Choice of finish: a wide range of aggregate blends, from light golden stones to darker greys, to complement brick, flint or rendered frontages.
- UV-stable resin: we use UV-stable resin so lighter colours are far less likely to yellow in the strong seaside sun.
Getting the base right
Resin is only as good as what it is laid on. It can sometimes go over an existing sound concrete or tarmac drive, but cracked, sunken or poorly drained bases need to be dug out and rebuilt first. That is especially important on the low-lying ground around Langney and the Willingdon Levels, where water sits closer to the surface. We will tell you honestly whether your current drive can be overlaid or needs a new sub-base.
Weather and timing
Resin needs dry conditions and sensible temperatures to cure properly, so installation dates can move if the coastal weather turns. We plan around the forecast rather than rushing a job in the rain.

Resin Bound Driveway FAQs
What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?
With resin bound, the stones are mixed with resin before laying and trowelled into a smooth, porous surface. With resin bonded, loose stones are scattered over a layer of resin, which gives a rougher finish that isn't permeable. We recommend resin bound for driveways because it drains freely and doesn't shed loose stones.
Is a resin bound driveway permeable?
Yes. Water drains straight through a resin bound surface, so on the right base it usually meets SuDS requirements. That means you don't normally need planning permission when you replace a front garden with it.
Can resin be laid over my existing driveway?
Sometimes. If your existing tarmac or concrete is sound, has no major cracks and drains properly, resin can often be laid over it. If the base is breaking up or sinking, we dig it out and lay a new permeable base first. We'll tell you which applies after we've surveyed it.
How long does a resin bound driveway last?
A properly installed resin bound driveway using UV-stable resin will usually last 15 to 25 years. It is resistant to weeds, doesn't fade badly and needs very little maintenance.
How soon can I drive on a new resin driveway?
You can usually walk on it after about 6 to 8 hours and drive on it after 24 to 48 hours. The exact time depends on the weather. We'll give you clear guidance on the day.
Can resin be laid in wet or cold weather?
Resin needs dry conditions and suitable temperatures to cure properly, so we don't lay it in rain or when it is very cold. If the forecast turns, we will move the date rather than risk the finish.
